SSN Fix: DIY Upper HV Pack Heat Exchanger (Cooling Plate) Removal

Bypassing the lower pack is recommended, yes. It will eventually leak as well. As for the upper pack, draining it alone is not likely to fix the SSN message. If you do end up removing the cooling plates, please let me know. I would like to purchase a few dozen.

Part Wanted WTB: Battery Pack Heat Exchangers

Per title: I am looking to buy a few dozen of the heat exchanger plates from the FFE battery packs. If anyone that deleted their cooling system still has any, please let me know.

    FFE @ Pull-N-Save Phoenix w/Lower Battery!

North. Lmk if you do take a crack at it; I'd be happy to help :)

    FFE @ Pull-N-Save Phoenix w/Lower Battery!

Howdy All, Was looking for parts for my FFE before Thanksgiving and found that Pull-N-Save Phoenix North has a 2013 FFE for some reason. Went in before Thanksgiving to pull some interior trim and saw that it had been marked as 'battery removed'. I went back again yesterday for more parts, one...

SSN Fix: DIY Upper HV Pack Heat Exchanger (Cooling Plate) Removal

Have found a further downside to this mod: at high-ish ambient temps (was seeing this at 90-100F), charging throttles hard. This seems to be due to the onboard charger (SOBDM) overheating. As best I can tell, whether the car activates the chiller in the battery coolant loop is based solely on...

    Connectivity Options for 2012-2015 FFEs?

Howdy All, What are the connectivity options for 2012-2015 FFEs? The dealer was able to order a 4G modem upgrade kit for my 2012, but I can't find any info on installing it in a pre-2016 MY car. Fordpass might suck, but it's better than nothing.

SSN Fix: DIY Upper HV Pack Heat Exchanger (Cooling Plate) Removal

Quick addendum here: Ford addressed this issue in the 33.5 kWh packs by adding clamps to keep the cell stacks compressed. At first glance, this seems like something that it would to be easy to retrofit the 23 kWh packs with. However while there is plenty of research on compressing new pouch...

SSN Fix: DIY Upper HV Pack Heat Exchanger (Cooling Plate) Removal

Interesting. I wonder if we have different BECM firmware or something. Mine never forced a complete stop, it just kept limiting performance until the car barely moved.

SSN Fix: DIY Upper HV Pack Heat Exchanger (Cooling Plate) Removal

Ah, gotcha. That makes sense. If you don't wait for it to cool off, do you get a stop message or just a limited performance warning?

SSN Fix: DIY Upper HV Pack Heat Exchanger (Cooling Plate) Removal

UPDATE 2: removing pack cooling also effectively disables cabin cooling (explained below) That definitely shouldn't be happening with working pack cooling. There's a chiller in the coolant loop which diverts refrigerant from the cabin AC if necessary. As I learned today, the FFE prioritizes...

SSN Fix: DIY Upper HV Pack Heat Exchanger (Cooling Plate) Removal

Just completed this mod with my 2012 FFE. The car now charges, though I suspect the pack is not much longer for this world. The cells were so swollen that the pack was genuinely difficult to take apart. Removing the heat exchangers freed up enough space that the pack went back together just...

    Rebuilding the Battery?

With a large enough order, having custom cells made wouldn't be a problem. The issue would be getting the old cells out. From what I saw when I took my pack apart, it looks like it might actually be cheaper to just build new modules from scratch: Not only is every cell spot welded(?) 3 times...

    Rebuilding the Battery?

Hi All, I finally got the upper pack pulled out of my 2012 FFE and the bulging is pretty bad. Given how insanely hot it gets here in Phoenix, I'm wary about simply deleting the cooling loop. Ideally I'd like to rebuild the pack with new cells, but I've never done such a thing before. Has anyone...

Is There a Way to Force Charging?

Aha! I missed a couple of bolts. Also the bottom left one on the rear wouldn't come out for some reason... I'll try one last time to charge it tonight, then I'll tow it home and pull the pack. Do we actually know where the leaks typically come from? Living in Arizona, I'd like to retain the...

Is There a Way to Force Charging?

Update #2: no sign of moisture in the lower pack. Can the cover of the upper pack be removed without removing the pack from the car? If I can get the cover off, I'm thinking there's a good chance the pack will dry out enough in the desert heat to at least take a charge.

    Failed High Voltage Battery

Leaking coolant seems to be such a common problem that a class action would be worth at least looking into. Battery packs should not be failing before 100k miles.
