I love researching the thermal management systems of the various electric vehicle powertrains. To my knowledge, the Chevy Volt and Spark EV were the only systems using individual cooling plates for each cell pouch. Most other liquid cooling systems use large cold plates, that the bottom or one side of a cell module contacts. I was so fascinated by the Chevy system that I was actually considering buying a Spark EV and have been shopping for one. Well, I guess I won't have to do that anymore.

With some digging, I was able to find a semi-teardown of the FFE battery packs. Guess what? No cold plates for our packs, a cooling plate for each cell pouch! I am so happy to learn this! It makes me love the FFE all the more!

The teardown is in appendix B of this DOT NHTSA safety testing document. Enjoy!

Now all we need to do is find 430 higher energy density cells with the same dimensions at a reasonable cost and rebuild the pack

If you really want to see how the cooling system works just read this:

Thank you very much for that pdf jmueller065. Would you happen to have any more of that training?
