Trying to figure out the best option for the inherited key situation I have with the new-to-me FFE 2017 I just got.

Key 1: in working order
Key 2: damaged by water. buttons do not work. however, placing it in center console DOES start the car.
Key 3: aftermarket, unprogrammed. unsure if it's the right thing or not.

What I just tried was to use the self-programming technique described in this forum and in the manual but it did not seem to work.

I thought that maybe the damaged key would still be usable for programming the 3rd key because it still works to start the car. Bad logic?

Could it just be that I have the wrong aftermarket key? Trying to figure out how to upload a photo and will do that once I figure it out.

Having spoken to local locksmiths, it sounds like they will charge me $90 to try to program a key, whether it works or not.

Anyone have any thoughts or knowledge on how best to proceed?

Just an update to say that I was able to take the aftermarket key to a guy with a forscan and the key was able to be programmed, only costs $30. The extra feature to open the door using the sensor on the door handle doesn't work but lock/unlock and starting the car works so that is good enough for me.

I didn't think forscan supported PATS for the MK3 focus??? Well it has been several years I guess they finally added that functionality. I ended up buying a 3rd used fob off fleabay. When my car was in for my 12V issues they had to reset everything and asked for all my fobs to reprogram the car to use them. I just neglected to tell them the car wasn't programmed to the 3rd fob and got it done for free...

Below is a link to the key vendor I used:

My Focus Electric came with one key. I took two new keys to the dealer and had them added to the vehicle.
