Ford Focus Electric home solar charging option?

If driving an electric vehicle isn’t beating the system enough, perhaps charging your 2012 Ford Focus Electric with solar panels would be?

Ford has announced it is teaming up with SunPower, an established solar provider, to sell a solar energy system with the Ford Focus Electric.

Ford Focus Electric Solar PanelThe solar panels would be mounted on the roof of the house. Although they wouldn’t charge the Ford Focus Electric directly, the panels would provide enough electricity to the house to offset driving the Ford Focus Electric approximately 1000 miles per month. The main reason for this is that electric vehicles are usually out during the day and charged during the night – while solar powers are most effective during the day.

The system will consist of almost 150 square feet of solar panels, and will provide about 3000 kilowatt hours of electricity per year.

The Ford Focus Electric solar option will be available through Ford dealers at a cost of about $10,000. The panels can be installed by Future Shop’s Geek Squad, who is also installing car chargers for the Ford Focus Electric on behalf of Ford.

Could you use on of those small solar panels that plug into your cigarette lighter to trickle charge the battery while it’s sitting in a parking lot?
