The Detroit giant's first mainstream electric vehicle will not only be emission-free, Ford said January 19, it will also be constructed of recycled and renewable materials.
The Ford Focus Electric will have seats made with 8% soy products. Sound deadening material will be a lightweight wood product called Lignotock rather than the glass reinforced plastics that are usually used - Ford says Lignotock actually deadens sound better anyways. Carpets and wheel arches in the Ford Focus Electric$ also contain recycled household items like milk jugs and pop bottles. The charger casing will contain at least 60% recycled materials.
An IBM survey released this month shows that the top reason for US consumers to buy an EV is higher oil prices, followed by sustainability concerns, which explains why Ford is working hard to include recycled and sustainable materials in their Focus EV.
