The City of Chicago is promising 280 electric vehicle charging stations by the end of 2011. The $8.9 million project will have a large proportion of stations with DC quick chargers, that can charge up to 80% battery capacity in about 30 minutes (this is the type of charging Nissan has recently stated can shorten the useful life of your battery pack).
Currently, quick-charge capability is limited to the Nissan Leaf and Mitsubishi i-MiEV. The Ford Focus Electric is capable of adding 20 miles of range per hour at Level 2 but will not be equipped with a quick-charge port.
Though locations aren't finalized, they will likely be in shopping centers, Airport parking lots, and tollways.
Here is a map from the Chicago Auto Show shoing installations on major interstates:
There are currently no plans for curbside chargers because of the length of time required to obtain permits etc. The plan is to install curbside chargers eventually, it's just a slower process that's being worked on.
