When Henry Ford started building cars over 100yrs ago there were very few gasoline automobiles, the majority were electric and steam (yes steam!). In the 1950s GM had bought the patent on a steam powered car that was `run-ready`in 1minute due to a two-staged boiler design that generated power quickly from cold. The reason why we are tied to gasoline today is because Ford partnered with Texaco for gasoline (at that time a waste product from kerosene production) and made for cheap and portable filling...once Ford eliminated the crank start for an electric starter there was no going back.

Obviously I oversimplified things, but it`s taken us 100yrs to go back to where we started.
