We dont pay a sales tax on electric vehicles in Washington state. It is interesting how cheap the cars become when you add no sales tax, 7500 federal rebate, and gas savings!

However it appears Washington state doesn't offer an electric car cash rebate like some other states.
California offers a $2500 cash rebate check on purchase or 3year lease of an EV for example.
That $2500 is pretty much equivalent to the sales tax in California on a $30K car, so it ends up about the same.

None of the dealers in Washington who I dealt with knew that battery-electric vehicles were tax-exempt. The one I finally bought from made me put it in writing that I would be responsible for all taxes if my assessment of the tax liability was wrong.

But that benefit ends on July 1, 2015. The folks I spoke with from the various electric vehicle advocacy groups didn't seem very confident that it would be extended.

If you've leased an electric car in Washington, like I have, you start paying Sales, Motor Vehicle Sales, and Use Taxes on your monthly payment amount only after July 1, 2015.

It's a great deal, although the FFE is not easy to find. I just bought mine on 11/4. < $20000 after tax credit, and no sales tax.
