What are these 2 slits next to shifter?

Anybody know what the 2 slits next to the shifter is for?

That slot is on gasoline-engined versions of the Focus too. Actually, I found the right words to google this and discovered people "believe" its for credit cards and plant ID (like when going to work). I wonder what Ford "believes" it is? LOL

I think I'll use it to carry my deli meats snacks with me when I drive....... yep
 
They are for cards. gas cards, charge point cards, punch cards for coffee or donuts, access cards for parking etc. any type of card that you would use when driving your car instead of searching in your wallet or purse all the time. I use it for my coffee card. Could be good for insurance card too. not a bad idea for an unused spot. On some models the spot is used for an option, I can't remember what it was though.
