Toyota and Ford announced on Monday that they will be collaborating to develop light truck and SUV hybrids by 2020.

Toyota Vice President stated the collaboration is a move to make hybrid technology more available on sport utility vehicles and trucks as these models are 'indispensable to American consumers.'

The companies will be working to make better hybrid solutions more quickly and more affordable to customers. Toyota pioneered the hybrid movement with it's Prius, and Ford knows how to make pickup trucks affordable and make them in high volume.

Neither company would say which trucks or SUVs would be using the new hybrid technology.

Toyota spokesman John Hanson said it's too early to say how the new hybrids would be integrated into production at Toyota's pickup plant in San Antonio.
"My initial reaction is that it shouldn't be a difficult situation," he said.
