Many people have said that the battery switching model of electric vehicles is a lost cause. The swapping stations would need to house too many different types of batteries, too many of each type, and it just doensn't make sense for an Electric Vehicle owner to have some used and possibly abused battery pack swapped into their car. Plus, the up and coming 2012 Ford Focus Electric and the Nissan Leaf do not have easily accessable battery packs - rendering them unswappable.

Better Place, the company behind electric vehicle battery swapping, has been going all out in Israel setting up battery swapping stations at regular intervals. But Israel is a fairly small country, and it makes the area much easier to cover.

Last week Better Place unveiled their first European swap station, located near Copenhagen in Denmark.
Denmark will get 20 of these swapping stations, which means Denmark has taken the lead in Europe. In theory the battery switching network will give electric vehicles unlimited range (electric vehicles that have the ability to use the swapping stations).

Renault plans to make their Fluent Z.E. battery packs swappable, but Nissan, Mitsubishi, Puegeot and Citroen batteries are all sold with the car. Sadly, this of course includes the mysterious 2012 Electric Ford Focus as well.
