You've all heard of Better Place - the company out of Israel convinced that charging stations that swap batteries in and out of an electric vehicle are the key to the electric car industry. If you've been on any electric vehicle site, you'll have seen the discussions about why that does or doesn't work and where it would or wouldn't work. Regardless of your opinion, if battery swap stations were available, it would affect sales of electric vehicles that don't have swappable batteries - like the 2012 Ford Focus Electric.

Electric vehicle battery switching involves driving into the station and having the dead (or close to dead) battery pack switched with a different fully recharged unit. The process takes under 5 minutes and the driver doesn't have to leave the vehicle. Denmark is having 20 of these stations built around the country to help calm range anxiety among new and possible electric vehicle owners.

Johhny Hansen, the CEO of Better Place Denmark says "I am convinced that with the Battery Switch model, we have overcome the last barrier to the electric car’s commercial breakthrough: range."

One of the Ford Focus Electric's main European competitors, the Renault Fluence ZE has a battery pack that can be swapped by the Better Place stations. Available in 2012, the Fluence Z.E. will have a price tag of around £17,850 after the electric vehicle rebate.
