Japan's automakers are pushing to have their recharging technology set as the global standard. Nissan and Toyota have teamed with Japan's larget electric company and the Japanese government to make it happen.
Their aim is to corner the market on high-speed charging points that will act like gasoline stations for Electric Vehicles and enable drivers to keep driving after the battery runs low.
The main idea is to develop a common charging language for electric cars which should encourage manufacturers and customers alike.
The Ford Focus Electric will probably be available before a standard is developed, which may result in owners having trouble finding a charge station that accepts the Ford Focus Electric.
Some US utility companies have signed up to the coalition, so Ford should be watching and see if they can make the Ford Focus Electric globally friendly.
