Barb Samardzich went to Toronto Auto Show to tout the Ford Focus EV (electric vehicle). Barb is the Vice President of Global Products programs at Ford.
Ford is about to launch the new Ford Focus compact car and has put a lot of eggs in the same basket. The Ford Focus Electric will use the same platform as 9 other vehicles, including the Ford Kuga and the Ford CMax minivan.
If this global platform plan works out, Ford is set to make some nice big profits. However, if anything is wrong with the chassis or drivetrain parts, the problem will likely show up on all 9 vehicles. Think Toyota - they use a platform type of strategy, and when they had a problem with one vehicle, it showed up on others and they've had to recall millions of vehicles.
Risky or smart?
