'8 year/100K mile Bttry PK & Unique Elctrc Cmpnents' covers?

Sun Nov 18, 2018 3:03 pm

Hello,

I'm a former 2014 FFE leasee who returned the lease in Aug of 2017. That car now resides in Amman, Jordan.

So, I just bought a 2016 FFE that had an in-service date of 5-4-2017. It still has 18 months on the 3 yr/36K mile B to B warranty.
Finance manager did the hard-sell 3rd party service warranty. I did not buy it. I asked what already comes with the car as it is. The selling points were:

1. 2331 original miles. (yes, two thousand three hundred thirty-one! It looks and smells like it lived on the showroom floor for 3 years. Absolutely brand new appearing in every manner) (Probably sat in the service dept. non-operative!)
2. Ford Certified Pre-Owned Comprehensive Limited Warranty for an additional 12 months/12K miles added to the end of the 3 yr/36K B to B warranty.
3. Ford Certified Pre-Owned Powertrain Limited Warranty for 7 years/ 100,000 miles from in-service date.
4. Clean, one-owner CarFax.
5. $15,900 seemed fair. It's basically a brand new car.

Has anyone had any service work done under the '8 year/100K mile Bttry PK & Unique Elctrc Cmpnents' warranty listed on the original window sticker? What are the 'Unique Electric Components?
Or for that matter, the 5 yr/60K Powertrain warranty listed on the original window sticker?
Has anyone ever had a good experience with a third-party service warranty company?
I'm trying to decide if there is any value to the 3rd party warranty beyond what already comes with the car.

The one offered me is called 'The Mechanic'. It is locally provided and administered in CA by Motor Warranty Services of North America.
Parent company is Resource Automotive recently purchased by Assurant. A company that sells warranties for just about everything under the sun. It says they sell 'peace of mind'. I have a feeling that the full extent of it. No real, tangible benefit.

Any suggestions?

I purchased a TRUE Ford warranty 8 years, 48k miles bumper to bumper, with 1st day rental, $0 deductible for $740. There are several places on the internet that offer them cheap. Flood Ford comes to mind (think that's where I ended up getting mine).

Do NOT get a 3rd party warranty. No need when the Ford one can be had at a good price.

I don't believe the EV component part of the warranty has changed from all year FFE. Here let me google that for you...
(used to be on fords website now only available from google cache) From the 2015 Model Year Ford Hybrid Car and Electric Vehicle Warranty Guide:

"(4) Your vehicle’s unique hybrid / electric components are covered during
the Hybrid / Electric Unique Component Coverage, which lasts for eight
years or 100,000 miles, whichever occurs first.
• The following hybrid parts are covered during this extended coverage
period: high-voltage battery, hybrid continuously variable transmission,
Inverter System Controller (ISC), DC/DC converter, high-voltage
battery connector, battery pack fan assembly, thermistor probe, Hybrid
Battery Pack Sensor Module (HBPSM), Battery Energy Control Module
(BECM), and the PHEV onboard charger.
• The following plug-in-vehicle unique parts (if equipped) are covered
during this extended coverage period: high-voltage battery packs,
high-voltage charger, DC/DC convertor, electronic drive module
assembly (includes electric motor and gearbox), transmission range
sensor, and charge cord.
Note: Lithium-Ion Battery Gradual Capacity Loss
The Lithium-ion battery (EV battery) will experience gradual
capacity loss with time and use (similar to all lithium-ion batteries),
which is considered normal wear and tear. Loss of battery capacity
due to or resulting from gradual capacity loss is NOT covered under
the New Vehicle Limited Warranty. See your Owner’s Manual for
important tips on how to maximize the life and capacity of the
Lithium-ion battery."

I can tell you the charge port light ring which tends to go bad is not covered. I'm pretty sure every thing under the powertrain warranty is covered under they 8 year EV component warranty. I suppose maybe some suspension or drive shafts would be covered under the powertrain? But at a quick glance it seems the 8 year EV component warranty would cover the powertrain.

Thanks folks.

I got my answer. The included warranties, plus the Certified Pre-Owned (CPO) warranties will be enough.

Here is what I posted in the dealership section:

Well, I finally read enough of the 3rd party service contract exclusions to find my answer.

And it's, HELL NO!!!

And now I am fairly upset.

Upon fine print reading I came across line #34 in the 'What this service contract does NOT cover' section.

'If your vehicle is powered entirely by a fuel source other than gasoline or diesel fuel'.

Utter, disgusting thieves, these folks. Tried to sell me an expensive service contract that could not ever be used at all.

PS. The charge port light ring was replaced under warranty on my 2014 FFE during the lease period for the first quadrant LED failure.
Looks like that quadrant light is the second most prevalent failure next to 12 volt battery discharging.

I should go buy a lottery ticket. I've had both on my '14. My Focus is on the 3rd TCU (cause or at least part cause in my 12V problems). I think ford laid a turd with the TCUs since they don't last much more than a year in my FFE. Either that or my FFE is libertarian and keeps killing the TCU to keep big brother ford from spying on it..
