I was checking out the new Volkswagen e-Up! and a question popped into my head. Does anyone hear on the ford focus electric forum know where to learn about the legalities of importing foreign electric cars to the US? Is it even legal to bring a Volkswagen e-Up! to the states? On a similar side note and on a related topic. Will residents of other states be able to buy a Ford Focus Electric car in lets say California and then register it in lets say Nevada? Any help from the ford focus electric forum is greatly appreciated.

EVs have zero emissions, so are exempt from (meet) EPA emissions standards. NHTSA is a national safety standard. If the Up! complies with those standards, it can be sold in the US. The barrier to entry is Volkswagen. It is not considering the Up! or larger Polo for the US market.

Like the standard Up!, the five-door will stay in Europe.

Focus Electric can be licensed anywhere, but a change may effect buyers state and local incentives.

+1 on the state incentives ... most will not grant EV rebates unless the car is purchased from an in-state dealer; it would only make sense if your state offers nothing extra as you would still get the Fed Tax Credit as that's at a Federal not Local/State level; unfortunately many states still offer nothing extra so if so inclined I'd go for it but keep in mind shipping charges, etc.

I found there is a whole specific BMW i3 Forum (run by the same people as this Focus Electric Forum). They just started it up but there's already some people on there, including Tom Maloughney who has some inside info as he's been involved with BMW's electric vehicles since the Smart EV .
