I had this happen too. When the car didn't recognize the key, I would just push the unlock button on the fob and that would activate the key enough for the car to recognize it. I later replaced the battery in the fob and no problems since.

One question I would have is what about heat generation? Wouldn't there be some concern about the amount of heat buildup in the batteries and in the electrical components, lines etc? I'm not sure the FFE would handle the extra load of charging and discharging at the same time, or pulling that level ...

Last winter my FFE averaged 55-60 range when it was highs in the 30-40s. Most times when I went that far, I still had 10-20 left estimate. I charge the car in a barely heated garage, about 40-50 degrees, and do not precondition. My car is set at 65-68 degrees, (74 when my girlfriend drives it.)
